Tide Pooling at Moss Beach

Lena asked us to take her tide pooling for her 10th birthday celebration.
I remembered Moss Beach was a fantastic place to visit and discover a variety of plants and creatures.
We checked to see when would be the best low tide and struck out at
5am on Friday, May 11.
Hermit crabs were abundant and one of Lena's favorites!

Black and brown Turban Snails

California Mussel Bed

Green Anemone

Ochre Star

Look at all the Plants and Animals!

You have to look long and hard in the pools to see some of the creatures.

Bloom and a Princess

The sun rays were shining through the clouds today on the Summer Sweet Peaches.

Miss Lena won Cal State Royalty Princess Sunday February 25, in Turlock CA.

Preparing for the big Royalty Test!

Taking a written test is one part of the royalty contest.  Lena also judged 2 classes of rabbits, identified 29 different rabbit breeds, was interviewed and submitted a written application.

Frozen

 Icicles in the trees...
After irrigating for 24 hours yesterday, we woke up to ice on the trees.  We have not had any rain in December or January so the trees needed water.  Combined with 20 degree low last night...    Voila!    Ice!

Lena and Russell collected icicles before school this morning
Very pretty sight first thing in the morning

Showing Rabbits at Alameda County Fair

4-H in Action 1988 Demonstrating grooming Angoras
This is from 1988 the last year I showed rabbits in 4-H.  Third place Advanced Showmanship at Alameda County Fair.  Yes that is an English Angora I'm holding!

1989 I started showing my Rabbits in FFA.  I won Reserve Champion Meat Pen that year with Red Satins!  Pictured with the buyers Mr. and Mrs. Escalona.

Showmanship 1990, first place Advanced.  That's Dani White as the judge.

I continue to show rabbits at the Alameda County Fair in Open and have won Best in Show at the fair 3 times since showing as a youth.

Planting Hay

My boys planting this year's hay.
Ed's out planting the open field today in wheat and oat seed for horse and rabbit hay.  Hasn't been much rain this season, but we are hoping it arrives now that we have the crop planted!

Straight rows with the beds furrowed up (60 inch spacing) allow us to irrigate when we don't get enough rain.  In Vernalis we usually only see 8 inches of rain per year.

Showmanship

I've shown a lot of different spiecies, other than rabbits.  Here is a quick look at some of the other critters I raised and exhibited...
